Climb specialist shows he can win on flat terrain too
The Star, 15/2/2008

ROMPIN: Climb specialist Jose Serpa Perez of the Serramenti PVC team clinched Stage Six of the Tour of Langkawi here yesterday.

The Colombian, together with 15 other riders, managed to break away from the peloton after the first sprint zone at Felda Pulai, Johor. He then left the others in his wake to finish the 182.8km Bandar Penawar-Kuala Rompin race in 4’26:43.

In last year’s Tour, Perez won Stage Eight from Shah Alam to Genting Highlands en route to a runner-up finish in the overall standings behind Anthony Charteau of Credit Agricole.

“Many people think climbers can’t win on flat terrain, but I am glad that I proved them wrong,” Perez said after the win.

Meanwhile, Bouygues Telecom retained two jerseys, with Matthieu Sprick keeping the yellow jersey (overall category) and Aurlien Clerc the green jersey (sprint category).

Park Sung-baek of Seoul Cycling managed to snatch the blue jersey (Asian category) from Shinichi Fukushima of Meitan-Hampo-GDR.

Today’s 126.6km Stage Seven will be from Kuala Rompin to Kuantan.
