Tour de Langkawi: Change of course on the cards
NST, 31/12/2007

ON the back of criticism over the surprising route announced two weeks ago, the Le Tour de Langkawi's (LTdL) organising committee could be considering a change.

It is now inevitable that the Genting climb, the steepest mountain stage available and traditionally the highlight of the race, will be moved from the planned second stage to later in the race.

The Tour's 13th edition on Feb 9-17, is set to run as scheduled, but with a reshuffle of stages, which realistically should serve to regain expectations of an exciting race.

LTdL chief operating officer Datuk Naim Mohamad, however, stated that this possibility is only being considered upon requests of teams and some sponsors, but isn't yet confirmed.

"We had initially planned the route to meet several criteria set and to ensure that costs can be reduced. But seeing that there have been some serious requests for a more traditional route, we will be considering this," said Naim.

"It will be up to the organising committee to decide and for the Sports Minister (Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said) to approve of the changes."
