Langkawi is one of Malaysia's easiest islands to enjoy — a mix of beaches, hills, duty-free shopping and a relaxed pace. If it's your first visit, here's a simple guide to help you plan.
Langkawi sits off the northwest coast of Malaysia, in Kedah. Most visitors fly in to Langkawi International Airport, with direct flights from Kuala Lumpur and Penang, among other places. You can also arrive by ferry from Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah on the mainland, and from Penang. Once you're on the island, renting a car is the most flexible way to get around, though taxis and ride-hailing are available too.
Langkawi is warm all year. The drier months, roughly from December to March, are the most popular for beach time. The wetter season brings more rain but also fewer crowds and lower prices, and showers often pass quickly. Either way, pack light clothes, sunscreen and a rain jacket just in case.
There's enough on the island to fill a few days without rushing:
Pantai Cenang is convenient if you want to be near food and nightlife. For something quieter, the north and east of the island have more resort-style stays surrounded by greenery. There's a wide range of options, from budget guesthouses to higher-end resorts, so it's worth deciding what kind of trip you want before booking.
Carry some cash, as smaller stalls and beach vendors may not take cards. Watch the sun in the middle of the day, and drink plenty of water. If you rent a scooter or car, go slowly on the smaller roads, which can be narrow. And leave a little time to do nothing — Langkawi is the kind of place that rewards a slower pace.
