If you need a break from the heat, the Cameron Highlands are one of the easiest cool-weather escapes in Malaysia. A weekend is enough to see the highlights at a gentle pace.
The Cameron Highlands are in Pahang, up in the hills of Peninsular Malaysia. Most people drive or take a bus from Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh or Penang. The road up is winding, so if you're prone to motion sickness, sit in front and take it slowly. The cooler air — often noticeably fresher than the lowlands — is usually the first thing you'll notice when you arrive.
The Highlands are best known for their greenery and produce, and most of the main sights are easy to fit into a couple of days:
The cool weather makes the Highlands a popular spot for steamboat (hotpot) dinners, which are easy to find and good for sharing. Scones with tea are something of a local tradition thanks to the area's history, and fresh strawberries turn up in everything from jam to ice cream.
This is one part of Malaysia where you'll want a light jacket or jumper, especially in the evenings and early mornings. Comfortable shoes help if you plan to walk the Mossy Forest or wander the farms, and a small umbrella is handy, as the hills can get sudden showers.
A relaxed approach works best: arrive and settle in on the first day, perhaps with a short market visit. Spend the next day on the tea estates and a farm or two, with a steamboat dinner in the evening. Keep the last morning easy — a walk, a final cup of tea, and the drive back down before the afternoon traffic.
